Invisible Children Pre-Screening! :)

Hey guys! I deleted the last post concerning the time and location of this event, since it contained some personal information that I don't  exactly want to disclose to the extensive web of public internet users. But anyway, thanks so much to Analynn, Howie, Kyle, Evan, Gregory, Hannah, and Jun for coming! We hope that with your new insight, will be willing to step up as a leader and advocate the cause with even more enthusiasm. For those who were not able to make it since (we apologize,) it was a very last-minute event, here is what happened. We watched the 50 minute documentary that inspired the creation of the Invisible Children movement and we talked a little about creating a Invisible Children/Schools-for-Schools committee. We have not made any concrete decisions though, so if you are interested, please come talk to us during the meetings on Wednesdays, or even better, during our board member meetings on Tuesdays (also in room 77.) Hope to see you there!

Welcome Key Clubbers, new or old!

Picture
We hope you guys had a wonderful summer! Key club, which is sponsored by Kiwanis International, is a club dedicated to helping you find opportunities to serve your community. In case you've forgotten, we meet every Wednesday in Room 77, which is located on the aisle closest to the gym. Everyone is welcome, so bring your friends and come pick up a Key Club Forum! Below are some of the service projects our club completed last year. This year, we plan on providing at least two events per month that you guys are interested in. There is a huge spectrum of possible activities and if you have any ideas, we encourage you to come talk to us or feel free to leave a comment under the "Event Suggestions" tab! If you have any questions, you can contact us through email. Our contact information is located under the "Board" tab.

After School Bake Sale

Picture
Hey everyone!! Thursday,  April 1, 2010 we will be having a bake sale after school. We are teaming up with three other clubs on the campus and hoping to donate all proceeds to help out Chile for recovery after the earthquake. We are counting on Key Club members to donate baked goods that we will be selling Thursday. Please make sure to drop off all baked goods in Mrs. Kalameja's room. We also need volunteers to help sell cookies after school, we will be in front of room 28. Thanks again.

Children's Faire

San Jose Public Library is looking for enthusiastic and energetic volunteers to assist with thier 22nd annual Children's Faire. It will be April 24 at Discovery Meadow Park near the Children's Discovery Museum in downtown San Jose. Volunteers will get free T-Shirts but in order to sign up you must fill out a form and all additional information can be found on the attachment(attachment is on the 'Forms' section of our website. A Heart for a Heart

Picture
One of our most anticipated events is coming soon. As Valentine's Day is just around the corner, love is in the air. Key Club is showing some love by selling heart shaped cookies to raise money for the American Heart Association. But with such a huge club, we need a BIG kitchen. So, the Key Clubbers are heading over to the Foods classrooms of Leigh High School, to occupy the  kitchens and bake numerous amounts of cookies. All proceeds go to the American Heart Association. I hope everyone has their oven mitts ready!

Breakfast With Santa

Picture
Breakfast with Santa was a fun event held on December 5, 2009 at the Campbell Community Center. Three Key Clubbers attended, including President Abby Mesgana, Hanna Kim, and Christine Chiou. Christine and Hanna worked in the arts and crafts section. They helped little kids make different art projects after taking pictures with Santa! The event was busy, but fun at the same time. Family's came in the morning and eat breakfast together family style. There was even a upbeat guitarist who was running around singing Christmas carols. This was definately a festive event, and thanks to everyone who came to help!

Kiwanis Christmas Tree Lot!

Picture
This event goes from Dec. 1  until a few days before Christmas.
Monday-Friday: 3pm - 8pm
Weekends: 9am - 8 pm

Everyone should definately go there for a minimum of 1 shift! It's a super easy and fun way to get hours. You don't need to sign-up ahead of time... just show up and sign in. Remember, the Kiwani's group GIVES  both the Leigh Key Club and the Branham Key Club money for participating. Whoever has more volunteers show up gets more money for their club. So, just get some friends and go for a couple hours, because the competition is on!

Save Our Shores!

Picture
This event was a first for Key Club. Thanks to the fantastic leadership of our vibrant project manager, Christine Benik, the club was able to have a great day at Poplar Beach (Half Moon Bay), while helping the environment. The key clubbers faced a tough situation when they arrived to find and empty beach with no official Save Our Shores people due to a miscommunication. But, Christine came to the rescue by going to a nearby shore and purchasing some trash bags and gloves. There were some light showers as well, but they kept working hard. Thank you for everyone who participated in this fun event!

Campus Clean-Up Day

Picture
We had a decent turn-out for this dismal task. Thank you to everyone who spent their minimum day to help clean the campus for an hour (while it was sprinkling too!) With around 7 people, we filled up almost 8 big trash bags! Well done. We will try and have a campus clean-up about once a month, because it's a great way to get hours. Thanks again to all the participants and hope to see more of you helping out next time!

Pumpkin Patch

Picture
I'm sure everyone who attended this event would agree that it was a lot of fun. All of the Key Clubbers were set up at game stations and helped run games for little elementary school kids. One of the most interesting games, in my opinion, was the "Pie Throw". The little kids had to opportunity to throw plates of whipped cream at their teachers face. Julie Nguyen was the girl in charge of getting the plates filled with cream. Some Key Clubbers including Hanna Kim, Christine Chiou, and Melanie Truong came dressed in their Halloween costumes, which was very festive. Good job to all the members who went... you guys did a fantastic job!

UNICEF 2009

Picture
Thank you to everyone who donated to UNICEF this year! Though only about 10 people participates, we were able to raise a lot of money. The money was donated to the Red Cross Foundation and will distributed to areas in need. There were many wonderful contributions, but the three most distinguishable ones were made by Hanna Kim, Rose Yang, and Michelle Hopper. Hanna raised the most money by far, exceeding 74 dollars! Next, Rose raised around 43 dollars, followed by Michelle who raised 32. Great job you guys! Well, thank you again for everyone who participated and also to everyone who spent some lunchtime counting coins. Great job this year you guys, and let's try to do even better next year!
